Origins
The Black British History Local Perspectives Network first met in January 2024 with the aim to promote work on local Black histories. Across Britain, there are a plethora of Black history groups and individual historians working to recover and make visible the vast wealth of Black experiences, perspectives and intellect. BBHLP aims to connect and put in closer conversation historians working in their own locales. With support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, we have since met four times in London, Cardiff, Preston and Liverpool to discuss research projects, heritage, school curricula and, of course, the region’s Black histories. In coming together, we hope to understand better Black British History as a vital part of our national story.
